Learning to Teach

Natalie's most sustained thread from the Provo MTC: she has been taught the gospel her whole life and does not remember being taught it, so the work is not learning the material but learning to put it into words for someone who does not have it. She reads the struggle through Ether 12:27, that God gives weaknesses so he can make them strengths, and repeats the line "as long as I try my best, he will fill in for the rest." The arc so far runs from practice failures in her first week, through a first Helping Others appointment that "clicked," to two lessons on July 25 she described as going well without being planned.

The distinction she draws

The obstacle is not knowledge. In her own framing on July 21, she has been "a missionary" her whole life and does not have a problem being holy; what she has to relearn is how to explain the gospel correctly to someone who does not already have it, which she said also threw her during mission prep. She restated the same distinction on July 25: they know the material, and the hard part is figuring out how to say it, which mostly has to be worked out in the moment, so the preparation is to have a lot ready and go with it.

The scriptural frame

She anchors the struggle to Ether 12:27 (weaknesses made strengths) and to the line she uses in both her email and her calls: as long as she tries her best, he will fill in the rest, and then she will be unstoppable. She has said the good lesson would not have meant as much if she had not struggled badly the three days before it, and that God has been making her humble.

• 2026-07-18 - First Helping Others appointment. After a run of practice role-plays in which she said she did badly every time and sounded, in her words, like she had some form of a mental disability, the actual lesson "clicked" and she did well. She and her companion rated themselves moderately; the teacher's review matched or came in slightly lower. She said she did not care because she needed to do well for herself, to know she can do this.
• 2026-07-21 - Names the whole pattern explicitly on her first P-day call and in her weekly email. Says she needs to teach by the Spirit, which means having the foundational knowledge in place so the Spirit has something to pull from, so she is paying attention in class and doubling up to catch up.
• 2026-07-25 - Two lessons the same day. In class, practicing the restoration lesson, she got on a roll about Jesus and Heavenly Father knowing Joseph Smith by name in the First Vision: "I don't even know what I was saying because it was straight from God," and "There was a fire in me and it was the spirit." Their time ran out and the group yelled "no!"; she was on a spiritual high for the next thirty minutes. That evening, her second Helping Others appointment with a contact named Parker went off-plan, moving from faith and church attendance to the Atonement because he asked what to do when he keeps making the same mistake. "And he gave us amazing reviews." She said she is now "just so excited to teach real people."

Open thread

As of July 25 she still does not have the First Vision memorized, which she acknowledged and deferred. Worth watching whether that closes in the field.
